KL Tour First Stop: Bah Kut Teh + Durian
At 11am, we drove to where Margit was staying - YWCA. It's situated in KL beside Methodist Boy School (Lyssa's Bf calls it the Monkey Boy School because he studied there but I think Mad Boy School is more appropriate :p). It was quite a search because none of us have heard of it but we managed to locate it with the help of a girl from a church nearby.
First stop: Bah Kut Teh at Pudu
This place was highly recommended by Lyssa and her Bf. Apparently, his family are regulars at this place. Unfortunately, it was after we sat down that we found out that Margit is a vegetarian! Fortunately, she takes seafood. We ordered Bah Kut Teh, Lala (shell like seafood), cabbage with preserved tofu and deep fried tofu with chili sauce.
I apologise for not having any pictures of what we had because I was so busy eating I forgotten all about it. The restaurant must be quite famous because groups of tourist were arriving by the bus loads every 15 minutes. Business was obviously booming.
Margit was very happy with the Lala because there aren't any fresh seafood in Austria (she's from Vienna). She was especially fascinated by how the cabbage was prepared and was curious about the preserved tofu (Later we brought her to one of the malls and showed her the bottle of preserved tofu). Being a vegetarian, she's glad to learn more methods to prepare vegetables.
Durian
Since we were a bit disappointed that our initial plan go as planned, I suggested trying out the King of Fruits - Durian. There was a stall nearby and we bought a Durian for Margit to try. Her friends told her it was horrendous and the smell is very strong. But when she smelt it, she loved it. The aroma of the Durian was not very strong because it was at the roadside but the taste was delicious.

Margit was very brave to try it and she enjoyed it thoroughly. Who says "ang moh" don't like Durians ah???

Places You'd Bring Your Friend to Visit in KL
My best friend met another traveler from Vienna in Bali. Her name was Margit (pronounced as Mar-get because it's German). She came over to KL two days ago and we all brought her around KL for a day.
Before I blog about what we did and where we went, I would like to hear from you first. Where would you bring your friend who's here for the first time, interested to experience the Malaysian culture in KL? Keep in mind the low budget.
I hope you can come up with interesting ideas so the next time she comes again, I can bring her to more places! :)

Moth (not for the faint hearted)
I remember someone told me that when you see a moth in the house, it's actually someone who passed away coming back to give you a visit. So I took a picture of this "someone".

Houses
When I stare out from the car window, looking at the residential area, I find myself wondering how these houses look like inside.
If the house looks gloomy and dimly lit, I would portray a living area with rattan sofas and green cushions. An altar at a corner. Are there any tiles? No, no tiles, it's a cement floor.
Someone's watching TV. The glow of the screen is all that lit the room, silhouettes play on the walls. A lonely house.
I think about the rooms upstairs. A simple queen size bed. Not very new but yet very familiar. The windows of the room are opened. The wind blows in and I can hear the rain pouring outside. I feel sleepy already.
If I come across a beautiful house, bright and welcoming, I look into their porch. I see neat tiles and clean floors. I peek into their living room through the sliding door for just a second. But the yellow lightings washed warm feelings all over me. A serene living room.
Everybody's in their rooms. Kids upstairs, parents resting and a maid sleeping. Oh, there should be a dog somewhere - a big black dog.
Different houses trigger different imaginations in my head. I wonder how I'd like my very own home to be.
Tell me about yours.

Hail, Tsunami, Snow Storms and what more?
The Earth is going haywire.
I made this proposal to my friends then, one simple thing: Let's switch off our air condition for an hour a day. The feedback was not satisfactory but I want to pose the same challenge to you. I've done so for a week now and I urge you to do the same. Just one hour.
After centuries of pollution, the Earth finally retaliates, just like our local political scene. A few years back, there was the tsunami; Earlier this year, heavy snow storms hit China during Chinese New Year; Floods and earthquakes have sadly become common. Even our country has experienced tremors from the massive earthquake that took place in neighbouring Indonesia.
What do all these signs mean?
I used to think that we now find news on natural disasters so frequently because technology has allowed such information to be spread across the world so easily. I used to believe that the Earth still has a long long way to go.

I used to think that we now find news on natural disasters so frequently because technology has allowed such information to be spread across the world so easily. I used to believe that the Earth still has a long long way to go.
Recently, my opinion on this subject has changed. Why? Because I realised there is something I can actually do to reduce the pollution. Pollution sounds like such a big word. Something that doesn't seem to relate to me personally. But to be frank, it really has everything to do with my everyday life.
A few days ago, my friends and I were discussing about some industrial factories which will close down for an hour or so once a week to reduce pollution. We were surprised that one hour rest could actually do a lot of good to Mother Earth. One of my friends even rebuked those companies who refused to join in the campaign.
At that very moment, something struck me. Aren't we as much a hypocrite as they are?
Have we done so? Can we use the fan instead just for an hour? Or better still, use that hour for a jog at the park and come back feeling fresh and healthy for a change.

We could easily sacrifice an hour of not using the air cond or easily switch off electrical appliances when we're not using them. Buy biodegradable soap and don't throw rubbish anywhere you like.

Genius Turned "Asian Escort" (Prostitute)
It's April's Fool today.
Many of us are having fun while some of us are watching others have fun. Either way, we consider ourselves lucky. Why? Because we know we are not geniuses and we admit that we're just like anyone else. Because of that, we know that we are unique in our way and therefore confident with just who we are.
Unfortunately, not everyone are like us. There are some who are labeled as a "genius". Geniuses are so overrated in our society. The media gives so much attention to them, too much. The parents become too proud of their success in breeding such geniuses, it boosted too much on their pride.
Today, I read the report on Sufiah Yusof, 23, who calls herself Shilpa Lee. She was offered a place in Oxford at the age of 13 because of her talents in Mathematics. Her father, Farooq, who was a home tutor, immediately shot to fame. He told the media that Sufiah's success is not because of her natural talents but because of his upbringing and he promised more "Sufiahs" to come.

Her father, Farooq, who was a home tutor, immediately shot to fame. He told the media that Sufiah's success is not because of her natural talents but because of his upbringing and he promised more "Sufiahs" to come.
Sufiah ran away from University at the age of 15 but was found by the police 12 days later as a waitress. She refused to go back home and was taken in by a foster family. In an email to her parents, she wrote that she her life was practically a "living hell". It was told that she actually tried commiting suicide at the age of 11. Sufiah had a short marriage at the age of 19, to a trainee lawyer but her marriage lasted only about 2 years.
Recently, Sufiah was found to be a prostitute.
What a big change! A young girl once so full of hope. What went wrong? Was it because her father was so obsessed with producing geniuses? Was it because she just want to rebel after being abused physically and psychologically since she was young? Was she forced to into prostitution?
Sufiah Yusof is not the first, and sadly I believe is neither the last, to be found in such situations. I remember not long ago, a boy genius got into a University in Singapore but passed away a few years ago. I'm not very sure what happened but I remember it was something about the stress he had to endure that led to his demise (Correct me if I'm wrong).
I think the problem is that people are too obsessed with success. Too much emphasis in being a genius, in being the best. We tend to forget the very basis of our existence. We loose our very purpose of being alive. Her father said that her success was not hers but his. Likewise, Sufiah's situation is also his to blame.
I pity Sufiah. The media attention now is not doing her any good. The media is very cruel and very sarcastic in their report. She's still pursuing her Masters in Economics and I wish her all the best in her upcoming exams. I'm not saying what she did was right but despite her she making a wrong choice now, she still has a long way to go. I think what she really need was a family member who is truly concerned of her wellbeing.
That's why, family is so important.
